What a busy term it was here at Pender's! So much excitement with our bi-annual Writer's Festival where we were had a visit from author Sue Lawson who discussed her writing process, her books and ways in which we could all improve our own writing. Combined with this was our yearly celebration of Book Week where students participated in a range of activities across the week culminating in our Book Parade in the hall with parents and carers. Students had made their book week costumes and presentations as part of our weekly cross age programs. Another highlight of the term was our Grade 3/4 camp. In early September 55 intrepid campers including staff and parents headed off for three days in beautiful (but chilly!) Marysville. They participated a huge range of activities including the opes course, bike riding, cooking and the amazing rock climbing and abseiling walls! A fantastic result for the school was the increasing of our Out of School Care program to 45 places each day. We have been working toward this over the last few months and it was great that our families will see the benefit of these extra places this year. Of course the classroom learning was, as always amazing! Inquiry units focussing on Australian history (Grade 3-6) and the people who help us (Grade F-2) saw students present some fantastic work that was shared with other students and families at the culmination of the units. Term 3 also saw the start of Spring and our beautiful gardens are looking better every year and are greatly enjoyed by our students and community. This year saw the start of our weekly garden party on Monday afternoon. A number of students and their families attend each Monday after assembly and undertake work in our gardens - planting, pruning, sweeping, planning new designs all whilst sharing delicious afternoon tea! It's yet another wonderful example of the tremendous sense of community we have here at Pender's! We are looking forward to an even bigger and better Term 4! What a fantastically busy Term 2 we have had! We have seen wonderful learning in classes with inquiry units focussed on Earth Science, plants and growing. This was a wonderful fit for our inaugral mid winter Solstice Festival last week which saw a huge number of our families and students here at the school on Friday evening sharing soups and a BBQ and also participating in a spectacular lantern parade where much of the work creating lanterns was done as part of our weekly cross age activities. Our inquiry unit in the F-2 Area also saw students planting in our new planter boxes in the playground with the help of our friends from Northland Bunnings.
We also saw the offical signing of our Memoradnum of Understanding with our new sister school, Doan Thi Diem Primary School in Hanoi. We were honoured and delighted to have Mrs Hien and Mr Nguyen visit us at the school as part of the process. We have also seen a number of improvements works take place at th school over the term. Paitning of our Specilist building is almost complete and we will also see our front fence gain a new coat of paint over the holidays. Two weeks ago it was great to see our whole school participate in a full day excursion to the Venuto club in Bulleen for our yearly Italian Day. Students spent the day cooking, dancing and playing and it is lovely to be part of school community where our size means that we can take all of our students out together for a day! Thanks to all of our students and families for a wonderful term of learning and community and we wish you all a happy holiday! School starts again for Term 3 on Monday July 17th! Our grade 3-6 Area have been doing some amazing work this term as part of their Earth Sceince Inquiry Unit. See below for some fantastic images of Earth models and also some amazing reseach work done via the use of QR codes!
We are delighted to be able to announce that Classroom Cuisine will be working with us providing school lunch orders that will be delivered to the school from the start of Term 2. At this stage we will be trialling Classroom Cuisine during Term 2 and then making a decision later as to whether we can continue the service after that. Classroom Cuisine has been in operation since 2009 and provides school lunches to over 80 schools in Melbourne including some of our neighbouring schools in Northcote, Fairfield and Thornbury. Orders can be made for four days per week (Monday, Wednesday. Thursday and Friday) via their website with no orders or money being collected by or at the school. For more information or to register please navigate to: https://classroomcuisine.com.au/ There is also a link to the Classroom Cuisine website on the menu at the left or download a copy of the menu below. Lunch orders will be available at Pender's Grove from Wednesday April 19th.
I was very proud last week to be able to represent Pender's Grove PS on a visit to our prospective sister school, Doan Thi Diem School in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The school has around 3000 students in over 80 classes at their main campus and it was fantastic to see the students and teachers learning and teaching in a number of visits both there and to the school's other campuses during the week. The school's Principal, Mrs. Hien and her Assistant Principals were fantastic hosts and made sure that I saw not only saw lots of the school but also experienced a range of cultural activities during our time there. Students and staff from the school will be visiting Melbourne during this June and I am looking forward to catching up with them then. I am also hoping we will be able to host students from the school at Pender's Grove during 2018. See below for some images from the visit. Douglas The Victorian School Sports Awards are the highest sporting accolades presented in the Victorian government school system and earlier this week, Rylie, one of our Grade Sixes from last year, received an award for her achievements in hockey.
Only three students from Victorian State primary and secondary schools received awards for hockey so this is a fantastic achievement by Rylie. Some of her achievements that were highlighted at the ceremony were: · Selection in 2016 for Hockey Victoria’s under -13 team that competed at the National championships · Representing Victoria in the under-12 team at the School Sport Australia Championships · 2015 Sportsperson of the year at her local hockey club We are always proud of our students’ achievements outside of school and we congratulate Rylie and wish her all the best with her future involvement in hockey. Pender's students have been having a fantastic time over the last few weeks participating in the Little Devils Circus program each week.
The program teaches a range of age-appropriate circus skills over a number.of weeks across the term. In the final week students will show off their skills at a special afternoon show for parents and the community. The Little Devils Program also aims to increase feelings of resilience and coping, with a focus on teaching perseverance, building confidence and self-esteem See below for some photos of our Grade 3/4s exploring using different tools to investigate numbers. Today they were making their own abacuses.
What a great week we have had back at school here at Pender's this week!
On Thursday we welcomed our 22 new Foundation students and it has been great to see how well they have settled into the school and the enthusiasm on their faces each morning! Our Grade 1-6 students have been back at school since Tuesday and they have been working hard on our startup program this week. The startup program focusses on the new school year and ways in which we can all be our best in our learning and for our community. Don't forget about our 2018 Prep Experience program that starts on February 13th. More detail can be found in the post below this one. |
