Classroom Music
The Music program at Pender’s Grove PS is centred on the Orff approach to teaching music. This approach is a “child-centered way of learning" music and treats music as a system similar to language; Just as every child can learn language without formal instruction so can every child learn music through a fun and friendly approach. All classes in the school visit the music room for a 50min session each week with our Specialist Music Teacher.
Pender’s Grove is well stocked with a large variety of instruments. There are enough xylophones, metallophones and marimbas for every student in a class (including an impressive contrabass marimba). There are also enough ukuleles (in a rainbow of different colours) for every student in a class. The school has an impressive collection of percussion instruments and a full set-up for the school band, including electric bass, guitar, drums, keyboard and quality microphones.
F-2 students investigate the fundamentals of music with a broad variety of musical ideas such as tone colour, rhythm, melody, pitch, harmony, expression and form. Explanations about the physics of music and how sounds are created are included as part of the music curriculum and provide students with an insight into the function of music. Classes include singing, body percussion, marimba/xylophone performance, and performing on percussion instruments such as tambourine, drums and triangle.
3-6 Students further their comprehension of musical theory by writing and reading regular notation, such as crotchets, quavers, semiquavers and triplets, and further their ability to differentiate notes, rests, time signatures, bars and phrases. Students in Grades 3-5 utilise previous skills to perform on a variety of instruments including ukulele, marimba, drum kit, glockenspiel and various hand percussion instruments. Classes also involve singing, choreography and computer-based music production.
Students in the school also have the opportunity to further their skills and interest in instrumental lessons with private teachers on site and by attending lunchtime percussion or choir groups.
