Thanks so much to the parents that came along to our last working bee for 2015 yesterday. Unfortunately we didn't get through all of the jobs on our list as we didn't have as many attendees as last time but those that were here worked tirelessly to complete a number of tasks that have once again really lifted our outside play spaces. Check out the photos below of improvements to the Indigenous Garden, oval, south end of the car park and completion of our outdoor blackboard. We also had a good clean up of the schoolyard that involved a lot of sweeping, weeding and pruning!
JSC did some reflection on Remembrance Day today. Here are their thoughts:
Remembrance Day: On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month every year we have a minute’s silence. We do this because World War 1 was ended at the ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. We pay tribute to the soldiers that have fought in any war: World War 1, World War 2, Boer War, Vietnam War, Afghanistan Why is it important to us? Amelia- They fought for our freedom Ali- “They gave up their tomorrow, for our today” Adam- It’s important because a lot of people died and they thought they were doing it for their country but lots of the time it was political. People we will remember today Chani- My great great grandpa went to World War 1 but died in World War 2 after he was badly injured. Jarvis- My great grandpa survived World War 2 but three weeks after the war ended he died from his injuries. He flew in a fighter jet. Mel- My grandfather trained people to be pilots in war. Ali- My uncle fought in religious wars, he got shot and died. My dad was also shot but he is still alive. Amelia- My great grandfather was in a prisoner of war camp. He wasn’t alive for very long when he got out. Congratulations to students in Years 3-6 who completed their last eSmart lesson this week.
eSmart is a behaviour change initiative that is run in over 2,200 schools in Australia and has been running at Pender's Grove since 2013. The eSmart program is designed to help schools improve cybersafety and reduce cyberbullying and bullying. For more information have a look at: https://www.esmartschools.org.au/Pages/default.aspx What a fantastic couple of weeks we have had with our Pender’s Grove 2015 Writer’s Festival! Author visits from Anna Branford, Bernard Caleo and Nicki Greenberg were a tremendous experience for our students and the staff and have proven to be a great motivator for some fabulous writing and illustrating over the last two weeks.
We are looking forward to seeing our school book that will be based on some of this writing produced over the next few weeks. Thanks to all of the parents, carers, family members and friends that were able to come to our reading afternoon on Wednesday. It was great to see so many people coming along to the school to share their favourite books and love of literature. In addition thanks to all of the students that were able to dress up for our Literary Dress Up Parade (and thanks also to everyone who helped at home!). It was evident that a huge amount of work had gone into those costumes and is was a great way to finish our Writer’s Festival and celebrate our favourite stories. Our JSC reflected on Writer's Festival and here are their thoughts:
