What a great night we have had at the Grade 2 sleepover - Alan, Mel, Wendy, Jo, Douglas, Nick, Amy and 38 Grade 2 students all ready for fantastic fun in the F-2 building! A night walk, games and a HUGE chicken and salad dinner were just some of the great activities that students have participated in. Parents are carers will be back tomorrow at 8.30am to collect the children and we are sure that are bound to be a few students AND adults that will need to go home for a rest! Thanks to Alan for his great organisation of the night.

On Wednesday 26th August the Grade 6 students were lucky enough to go a photography excursion to enhance their skills and artistic flair. We began the day at Williamstown beach taking photos of where water meets sand, sand writing and sand and the body among other things. Students had to consider angle, foreground, background, texture, line and colour when taking their photos. The next stop was Williamstown Botanic Gardens where students had to complete a scavenger hunt and take photos of various photographic elements around the gardens, such as mono- and multi-colour, water, shape, man-made objects and line. We walked across to Nelson Place where we had lunch and took more photos, this time focusing on reflections on water. Students also had the chance to walk along the pier where they showed great curiosity exploring what they could see above and below the water. A great day was had by all! Thank you to all staff and students who participated! What a fantastic time we had last week as our 50 intrepid campers comprising 43 students, 3 parents and 4 school staff set off for our yearly camp to Doxa in Malmsbury. Over 3 days they participated in a range of activities such as bush walking and hut building, archery, river ecology, team building games, the low ropes course and the giant swing. Thanks so much to everyone that participated for making the camp such a huge success! Please see below for some photos of the activities but there are plenty more on display at the school office. On Tuesday the 11th some of the Year 5 and 6 students represented Pender’s at the Northcote District Sports Association Interschool Basketball Competition. Our students as usual were fantastic at demonstrating all our school values as well as playing Basketball. Well done to all the students who attended and thank you to Andrew W for helping Alan out with training and accompanying Alan and Deb on the day.
'For our inquiry unit this term all the 3-6 classes have been looking at the Earth, Moon and Sun. While the 3/4/5 classes are focusing more specifically on the position, direction of movement and effects of these three objects in space, the Grade 6s have been exploring the structure of Earth and how this structure causes major geological events. We started by observing and discussing tectonic plates, which make up the crust layer and 'move' across the mantle layer of our planet. We looked at an orange with the peel cut into different shapes, like puzzle pieces, but still resting on the fruit underneath. We experimented with pushing the peel pieces against each other and away from each other. We also created models of our planet, using a small rock to represent the core, modelling clay to represent the mantle and a small dusting of dirt to show the crust (a relatively thin layer compared to the core and mantle!). Today, we took this knowledge of tectonic plates and used wooden planks to observe the movement of soil, when dry and wet, on top of two moving planks. We discovered some predictable and unpredictable results as well as getting our hands dirty! |
