If there are any queries don’t hestitate to contact me or your class' teacher. Mille Grazie, LeeAnn Sartorel Italian Teacher Here is just a peek into our celebration of World Maths Day today. It was great to see students argue about the largest number or discuss how to read large numbers. Well done to those who answered the challenge to complete 10 challenges over five levels! Thanks for everyone's fun filled participation.
A fantastic $330.10 was raised for a special School-In-A-Box with some money that will be used by UNICEF. To see more wonderful photos you will need to subscribe to our special online newsletter! On Thursday, the Early Years classes were treated to an engaging road safety presentation by the RACV. The incursion was part of our investigation into communities and how we interact, and it taught us many things about keeping ourselves safe on the roads. We learned that helmets are not just for bike riders, but for skateboarders, roller-bladers and scooter-riders too! Liz and Anne from the RACV also taught us how to cross the road safely, and about some of the most important safety equipment we can use – our EYES and EARS. The classes will all be doing further investigations into road safety and will be meeting more people from our community in the coming weeks. On Wednesday 6 March students are invited to participate in World Maths Day. This event is sponsored by UNICEF and Mathletics. Students from across the school will be tapping keyboards as they answer mathematical challenges against other students from around the world. The lab will be a busy place with classes timetabled to use it not only during class time but throughout recess and lunch times!!! We invite each student to wear casual clothing during this special mathematical day with a number on it. It might be a football jersey or a t-shirt with a number on it. Each student is asked to donate $2.00 or more to donate to UNICEF. We have set our goals high and hope to raise enough during the day to purchase two School-in-a-Box learning kits. Each UNICEF kit is valued at US$236 and is enough to purchase a School-In-A-Box - a learning kit which gives around 80 children the opportunity to start school. This has an immediate, tangible impact in poor communities, and can be replenished year after year. Today six of our talented students plunged into the Northcote Swimming Pool competing in the Darebin District Swimming Carnival. They arrived back at school exhausted by their swims but thrilled to have achieved so much. The relay team achieved third place, while others achieved a range of firsts and thirds. Abbey just missed out on second in her freestyle and breaststroke races by a fngertip. Rylie knocked 22 seconds off her personal best hile Hugo amazingly took 13 seconds off his! Everyone did extremely well at this high level of competition. Each of the students said enthusiastically, "I'm going to be part of the team next year!" Well done Rylie, Isabella, Taysen, Hugo, Kayla and Abbey as well as Paula the coach for her creativity in designing the PGPS Swim Squad cap! Everyone is holding their breath this Thursday as our swim team plunge into the pool to compete in the District Swimming Carnival. Our thoughts are with Rylie, Taysen, Kayla, Abbey and Hugo as they mount their diving blocks awaiting the start of their races. All have been in training over these past few weeks. "We're all nervous and excited," said Taysen at lunch today. Their participation and eagerness to be involved has meant that they are winners already! A special thanks to Paula for encouraging the team along the way. Today 100 students from our Years 3 to Years 6 along with the multiage class joined with 22 000 other students from around the country in the largest gathering of young people on cybersafety in the world! There was a great deal of discussion promoting positive behaviours on the internet as well as strategies to stay safely. Passwords, cyber bullying, online behavioiur, privacy and scams were all discussed. Online polls during the presentation and classroom discussions ensured all students were engaged and learning. A small number from each class were thrilled at the end of the day when a surprise thankyou arrived from the organisers - we were presented with 30 drink bottles to present to some of the students. Thanks for all those who were flexible enough to shuffle timetables and organise the day. Here's what some of our students are saying ... "It was fun because we learned how to be safe." "We had the chance to visit the cybersmart site and took the kids quiz. I learned that if you are on a website game and there is a pop up, let your parents know about it." "We learned to tell an adult if you get a nasty email or see something that makes you feel uncomfortable." "If someone shares a password tell an adult and have the password reset."
