Year 5/6 students have been learning about the jobs geologists do. Geologists often take core samples of the Earth to work out the type of rock that is present or to investigate if there are valuable minerals present in the rock. Just like geologists, the students took core samples of cupcakes to investigate their different layers or colours. We predicted the structure of our cupcake layers from three core samples. Then we cut a cross-section to see how accurate our predictions were. In this Peer Support session two students are involved in an active listening challenge. Students sit back-to-back, each with a set of straws. One student makes a straw pattern while the other student listens carefully to the description and tries to create the same pattern. This lesson highlighted the differences between hearing and listening.
