Visual Arts at Pender’s Grove Primary School

At Pender’s Grove Primary School, our Visual Arts program provides students with the opportunity to explore creativity, develop artistic skills, and express themselves through a range of media. Each class from Foundation to Year 6 participates in a 50-minute weekly session in our dedicated art room with a specialist teacher.

A Multi-Media Approach to Art

The Visual Arts curriculum at PGPS embraces a multi-media approach, giving students hands-on experience with:

  • Drawing and painting
  • Wire and paper construction
  • Collage and printmaking
  • Modelling and sculpture
  • Textiles and mixed media

While projects often combine different materials and techniques, students also engage in focused studies of particular mediums, such as pencil work or clay modelling, to deepen their skills.

Thematic and Integrated Learning

Art projects are often inspired by thematic units, which may:

  • Reflect classroom topics like volcanoes, water or environmental studies
  • Explore mathematical ideas such as tessellation and pattern
  • Support whole-school themes or initiatives

The integration of digital technologies enhances and extends learning, helping students connect traditional techniques with modern tools and practices.

Core Concepts and Artistic Elements

Students learn to understand and apply the elements of art, including:

  • Line, shape and form
  • Colour, texture and value
  • Space and composition

As they explore these concepts, students are encouraged to experiment, problem-solve and reflect on their own artistic process. The program places strong emphasis on self-expression, collaboration and confidence-building.

Celebrating Creativity

Visual Arts at Pender’s Grove isn’t just about creating art—it’s about celebrating it. Students regularly have opportunities to:

  • Respond to their own work and the work of others
  • Participate in art-based excursions and incursions
  • Showcase their creativity during our annual PGPS Art Festival, a whole-school event that brings the community together in celebration of our young artists
