At Pender’s Grove Primary School, we place a strong emphasis on student wellbeing as a foundation for learning. Our approach to social and emotional development includes a combination of school-wide programs, classroom initiatives, and individual support structures to ensure every child feels safe, respected and supported.
Wellbeing Support and Monitoring
Teachers closely observe students in the classroom and playground, responding proactively to their social, emotional and behavioural needs. Key policies, including our Student Code of Conduct and Policy to Address Bullying, are discussed regularly as part of classroom activities and our annual Startup Program.
The school’s Student Welfare Officer role is shared by our Leading Teacher, Dayle Manley, and our Principal, Douglas Lunt. We also work with Department of Education specialists including psychologists, social workers and speech therapists. When required, we assist families in accessing external counselling or psychology services through referrals via a GP Mental Health Plan.
First Aid and Safety
First aid is overseen by Andrea McGovern, our First Aid Manager. All Education Support Staff have Level Two First Aid certification, and our team completes biannual anaphylaxis training to ensure student safety at all times.
The Bounce Back! Social Skills Program
We use the Bounce Back! program to explicitly teach social and emotional skills in all classes. Lessons are delivered fortnightly and are supported by our Buddies Program on alternate weeks to give students practical opportunities to apply what they’ve learned.
Bounce Back! is:
- A long-term, whole-school program, not just an add-on
- Evidence-based and universally taught to all students
- Delivered by classroom teachers using picture books, cooperative games and circle time activities
- Integrated into curriculum areas such as English, History, Health, Science, Music, and Art
- Based on principles from Cognitive and Positive Psychology
- Supported by parent notes so families can reinforce the messages at home
Positive Behaviour and Respectful Relationships
We introduced the School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework in 2020 to improve behavioural, emotional and academic outcomes for all students. This evidence-based approach focuses on:
- Positive and respectful behaviour
- Increased time for learning
- A predictable, safe school environment
- Improved student and teacher relationships
In 2021, we also adopted the Respectful Relationships Program, which promotes equality, inclusion and prevention of family violence. This whole-school initiative builds healthy attitudes and behaviours across our community.
Student Voice and Leadership
All classes elect representatives to the Junior School Council (JSC) each semester. This student group meets regularly to suggest improvements and lead social initiatives such as fundraising and awareness campaigns.
Other student-led groups include:
- eSmart group – promoting cyber safety
- Sustainability and Garden Club
- Assembly leaders and Library monitors
These programs provide meaningful leadership opportunities and help students develop a sense of ownership and responsibility within the school.
