Physical Education at Pender’s Grove Primary School

At Pender’s Grove Primary School, our Physical Education (PE) program is designed to support every child’s physical development, health, and wellbeing. Each week, students from Prep to Year 6 take part in a 50-minute PE session led by our specialist teacher, aligned with the Victorian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education.

These sessions take place in our purpose-built school hall, which includes indoor courts, accessible toilets, and dedicated storage areas, as well as in our spacious outdoor play areas.

Developing Skills Through Movement

Our PE program builds progressively from Foundation through to Year 6. In the early years, students focus on:

Developing fundamental motor skills
Participating in minor and major games
Building confidence through movement

As students move into the senior years, they extend their learning through:

Complex motor skill development
Understanding and applying movement concepts
Enhancing fitness, strength, and coordination
Participating in sport education and structured games

All sessions emphasise participation, effort, and personal growth in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Curriculum Focus Areas

The Victorian Health and Physical Education Curriculum outlines the following focus areas across F–6:

  • Being healthy, safe and active
  • Communicating and interacting for health and wellbeing
  • Contributing to healthy and active communities
  • Moving the body
  • Understanding movement
  • Learning through movement

These areas guide lesson planning and ensure that students are gaining physical, social, and emotional skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Sports, Events and Extra Activities

In addition to weekly PE sessions, students have access to a wide range of additional physical activities throughout the year, including:

  • Swimming programs
  • Specialised sports clinics
  • School camps
  • District sports events such as Athletics and Cross Country

We are proud members of the Northcote Sports District, and our Year 5 and 6 students take part in Interschool Sport competitions across Summer and Winter seasons. These games promote teamwork, participation, and fair play, and include sports like:

  • Cricket
  • Softball
  • Netball
  • Football (AFL)
  • Soccer
  • Volleyball
  • Bat Tennis
  • Rounders
