Our Sensory Space

Our Sensory Space is a calm, colourful and tactile space designed to support student wellbeing by giving children a dedicated place to slow down, breathe and feel grounded.

This space has been created with the help of our community, including the efforts of parents and staff who worked hard to complete our new sensory room and quiet space in the Learning Neighbourhood (LN) building.

Why a Sensory Space matters

At Pender’s Grove, we know some students benefit from having access to a quieter environment at times during the school day. Our Sensory Space provides an option for students who need somewhere calm for a period of time, supporting their ability to regulate and re-engage with learning.

A community project, supported through local investment

The Sensory Space reflects what is possible when a school community and local supporters invest in student wellbeing. We are grateful for the grant support from Community Bank Clifton Hill – North Fitzroy that helped bring this project to life, and for the practical contribution of families and staff who helped make it happen.

Thoughtfully Designed Equipment to Support Regulation and Wellbeing

The Sensory Space is thoughtfully equipped to provide a calming, engaging and supportive environment for students. Within the room, students can relax in the egg chair, watch the gentle movement of the bubble tube or fish tank, and use a small trampoline to support movement and regulation. The space also includes a range of tactile toys and sensory resources, soft furnishings and cushions for comfort, books for quiet reflection, and weighted blankets to promote a sense of security.

Plants and natural elements help create a soothing atmosphere, making the room a welcoming place where students can reset and feel grounded before returning to learning.
