Thanks for a fantastic Working Bee!

26/7/2014

What a fantastic community we have here at Pender's Grove!  Today a huge number of parents, carers, staff and students braved the cold and rain and turned out to help continue the ongoing work to regenerate our Indigenous Garden.

Weeds and rubbish were removed, new plants planted and paths and a dry creek bed set out.  Another group completed the task of raking and topping up our playground softfall.

We would not have such wonderful outdoor spaces without such terrific efforts! We look forward to soon seeing students using the Indigenous Garden as an invigorating and engaging learning space.

Grade P/1 Vet Visit

26/7/2014

The Prep/One Investigations Inquiry for this term focuses on the concept of interdependence, how a community functions effectively and what part each individual plays in it. Students will develop an understanding about ‘What is a Community?’ and ‘Who works in our Community to help us? ‘

Students will explore who they are, where they live, who is important to them and the role they can play to support their community.

Today we were extremely lucky to have Lucy from Fitzroy Vet Hospital come and visit us and explain the role a Vet nurse and Veterinary doctor has in looking after our animals.

The students had written inquiry questions such as ‘What are the different ways a Vet helps animals?’ Which Lucy answered with expert knowledge!!

NAIDOC Week

26/7/2014

NAIDOC Week 2014 was a huge success  with a number of activities and celebrations being held across the week.

Activities began on Monday with a performance of Indigenous dance by the Gindan Djalbu Dance Group which our audience of students, staff and parents absolutely loved! It was also great to have Aunty Connie with us to begin our NAIDOC week with a Welcome to Country.

Activities continued on Wednesday with students watching the film Dust Echoes and on Thursday afternoon a Long Walk recognition was held as well the beginning of the process to create a Bunjil's Nest here at Pender's Grove.

On Friday the week concluded with a 3 on 3 basketball competition and BBQ. Thank you to all the families who assisted us with the organisation of the week.

5/6 Area News...

13/7/2014

Year 5/6 students have been learning about the jobs geologists do. Geologists often take core samples of the Earth to work out the type of rock that is present or to investigate if there are valuable minerals present in the rock. Just like geologists, the students took core samples of cupcakes to investigate their different layers or colours. We predicted the structure of our cupcake layers from three core samples. Then we cut a cross-section to see how accurate our predictions were.

In this Peer Support session two students are involved in an active listening challenge. Students sit back-to-back, each with a set of straws. One student makes a straw pattern while the other student listens carefully to the description and tries to create the same pattern. This lesson highlighted the differences between hearing and listening.

Prep/One Investigations in Term 2

13/7/2014

The Prep/One Investigations Inquiry for Term 2 was “What is my history and how do I know?”
Students learnt about their own history and that of their family. As participants in their own history, students built on their own knowledge and understanding of how the past is different from the present.
Family members came into the classroom and shared traditions that were part of their family history. We had a pasta making day which was a terrific learning experience.
