Sixteen of our senior students spent the day participating in a basketball competition. The boys and girls teams demonstrated that they could not only represent our school by showing their basketball skills but also by their teamwork and encouragement of each other. Thanks to all those who helped organise and participate in the day, especially Clare and Andrea.
Mark has only been with Pender's for a few days but already he has amazed students with his tales of lunchtimes up in Cape York country where students eat indoors so as not to tempt the crocodiles out of the local creek. He is here for the coming few weeks as Douglas is on Long Service Leave. Here's a little of his welcome ... I am thrilled to be the Principal of your school in Douglas’ absence albeit for a short time. I am no stranger to the area as I live locally. During my career as a primary teacher I have taught in twelve primary schools and taught every year level and specialist subject except Prep, Music and LOTE. One of the more exciting things I have done recently is working with secondary students in Bamaga (Cape York) Thursday Island and Cairns to develop literacy skills. I am also leading the development of a virtual learning environment that allows teachers and students to come together as avatars and work together regardless of where in the world they live. Google “Skoolaborate” if this kind of stuff interests you. As far as I’m concerned the best years of school are right now in Primary and at Pender’s Grove! Whether you are a parent or a student make the most of these Primary years as they will set you up for a full and rewarding life. I am fortunate to be working in a great community with a fantastic staff. From the office to the classroom, including Ray and Mary on the crossing, everyone has made me feel very welcome. Thank you. My door is almost always open. Feel free to say hello. Mark Kent Acting Principal One Tuesday, the clouds parted, rains stopped and wind died down to enable to provide just the right moment for Pender's students to venture into the city. Students in Years 3 and 4 were welcomed in a special smoking ceremony during their visit to the Botanical Gardens. They learned a great deal about Aboriginal cultures by exploring the use of a range of artefacts, weaving friendship bands and learning from our guide as we walked through the gardens. Students concluded their visit with a walk along Birrarung Marr and a play in the park. Thanks to all those who made sure this important day happened! Our Annual Book Fair starts this Wednesday and continues to Friday. Many students are participating already in the weekly quiz that is being distributed with our newsletters. Feel free to drop in before and after school to snatch up some wonderful books. Your support is greatly appreciated.
All the books sold contribute to raising funds for the purchase of library books. If you are able to spend just a short amount of time supervising the fair then please don't hesitate to speak with Michelle. This term the Year 1/2s are exploring how the waste we produce affects our community and what we can do to reduce the impact on the environment. Next Wednesday 7th August, Brendan Moore, the Litter Strategy Coordinator from the Darebin City Council will be visiting the Year 1/2s in the ELN. We will be discussing what happens to our waste once the rubbish and recycling truck picks it up. We are looking forward to meeting Brendan and finding out more about how we can help our community to reduce waste. On Monday 12th August we will be visiting CERES as part of our investigation. CERES is a not for profit educational organisation located on rehabilitated landfill in East Brunswick. We will be involved in three workshops: Paper Making, Merri Creek Walk and Bin Sort & Plastic Fantastic. CERES works on the RETHINK-REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE policy. The aim of the Waste-Free Lunch is to reduce the waste that goes into the lunch making process. We encourage students and families to positively contribute towards social and environmental sustainability by providing students with a waste free lunchbox for the excursion. |
