Today the hall was packed with parents and excited students ready to celebrate another week of learning at Pender's Grove. Thanks for all those who shared their time with us. It was great to see students share their insights into reading strategies they use when reading different types of texts. Anyone who was at the assembly would be impressed at the range if skills students use from when they initially pick up a book, begin to read the text and then after reading. Thanks 34O for the preparation and thoughtfullness that went into your great presentation. At the end of this post you can find an outline of their ideas that are a great resource for reading at school or at home. We are waiting in anticipation for 12P to share their learning next week.

Between 3:15pm and 3.45pm is a busy time for traffic in Victoria Road; therefore we ask all parents and carers to take care. Please use the crossings and if collecting your children by car do not double park or park in the crossing zone. After almost five years of communication with the City of Darebin we now have a disabled car parking space outside the school. This parking space has been constructed to support the inclusion of students with physical disabilities in our school. We ask that this space be left vacant at drop off and pick up times for families of students with physical disabilities and only be used by eligible people at other times. Thanks for your part in keeping our students safe. Today builders moved in and took over the playground. Students were initially upset until they worked out that in just a few days time a new playground will emerge. The playground was discussed by students in Years 3 to 6 late last year and now their plans are becoming reality. Here's what studetns are saying ... "I hope it will be fun and exciting." "It's going to be the delight of every student's young life!" "Everyone will love it." Friday assembly goers were thrilled when 3/4J presented their assembly item. Never before had an assembly been interrupted by a pop up on the projection screen! Students shared their expertise gained from their online conference on internet safety on Tuesday morning. Dealing with pop-ups, the importance of keeping your information private, dealing with passwords as well as responding to sites or images that are inappropriate were all mentioned. We look forward to hearing from 3/4O next Friday at assembly as they share a litle of what they have been learning. Here at Pender’s Grove, we care about the environment, and want to be a sustainable school! Lucky Lunchbox is a program we’ve set up so that children are encouraged to bring rubbish-free lunches. This means no packets, plastic wrap, foil, juice boxes, etc, that get thrown away and end up in landfill. Ziplock bags that get taken home and reused are acceptable, as are reusable containers of any kind, eg Nude Food, Tupperware, or Sistema. Once a week, on a random day, representatives from 3/4O will go to every classroom and see how many people have a rubbish-free lunch. We will tick their names on the class list. Then we will put those names into a box for the prize draw! Every Friday at assembly we will pull out a name and that person gets the prize. We will also award the grade with the most rubbish free lunches with a trophy that they keep for the week. So join us in becoming a sustainable community, bring rubbish-free lunches, and perhaps even win a prize for your efforts! Maya, Bahar, Olivia and Tameeka Today 100 students from our Years 3 to Years 6 along with the multiage class joined with 22 000 other students from around the country in the largest gathering of young people on cybersafety in the world! There was a great deal of discussion promoting positive behaviours on the internet as well as strategies to stay safely. Passwords, cyber bullying, online behavioiur, privacy and scams were all discussed. Online polls during the presentation and classroom discussions ensured all students were engaged and learning. A small number from each class were thrilled at the end of the day when a surprise thankyou arrived from the organisers - we were presented with 30 drink bottles to present to some of the students. Thanks for all those who were flexible enough to shuffle timetables and organise the day. Here's what some of our students are saying ... "It was fun because we learned how to be safe." "We had the chance to visit the cybersmart site and took the kids quiz. I learned that if you are on a website game and there is a pop up, let your parents know about it." "We learned to tell an adult if you get a nasty email or see something that makes you feel uncomfortable." "If someone shares a password tell an adult and have the password reset." International Safer Internet Day will be held this Tuesday 5th February. Its stated aim is to ensure ‘online rights and responsibilities will be used to promote positive digital citizenship across Australian communities'. 2013 is the 10th anniversary of Safer Internet Day. Coordinated by Insafe, the European network for internet safety, the event is supported in Australia by Cybersmart. Pender's Grove will mark the day when all students from Years 3-6 will join with 450 school from across Victoria in a Statewide online conference between 10.00am and 11.00am. It will be exploring the responsibilities that come hand in hand with being a digital citizen. You can find out more about how to encourage your children to be safe on the internet by visiting the Cybersmart parent portal.
