Congratulations to the 20 students in Years 3 to 6 who participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition on Friday. They joined with thousands of students within Australia and internationally to demonstrate their mathematical and logical skills in a one hour test. It was great to receive interest from so many students and we look forward to hearing how they went. |

The deep vibration of drumbeats have filtered throughout the school each Monday this term. Nick Adams, from The Song Room, is our musician in residence at Pender's Grove in Terms 3 and 4. He has been developing a range of drumming skills to students from Prep to Year 6 and preparing them for a performance to be scheduled in Term 4. We are all looking forward to the rythms that will continue to carry us through the year and accompany our learning. |

Students Visit Pompeii Thanks to Furlan Club |

Students in the two 5/6 classes as well as 3/4/5J and 3/4C will be visiting the Melbourne Museum and exploring the wonders of the popular Pompeii Exhibition. As part of their studies into Italian culture students will have the opportunity to be guided around this extraordinary exhibition, gaining an insight into life as it was over 2 000 years ago. The school was fortunate enough to gain a special 'Furlan Club Italian Studies Grant' grant from the Furlan Club that will be used to offset the cost of the transport and exhibition visit. Lee-ann Sartorel, Italian Specialist Teacher, and Glendy Jakober, Principal, were priviledged to recieve the generous grant from the Mr Robert Coute, President of the Furlan Club, in earlier in June. "It is not only a great gift from the Furlan Club," Lee-ann points out, "but it is also a wonderful endorsement of the Italian program at our school." |

The internet has become an integral part of life for people of all ages. It provides access to a myriad of information and enables people to research, create and communicate in new and exciting ways. For children and young people the internet has become essential to learning, playing and socialising, with many of them using computers and the internet from an increasingly early age.
But there are risks. Children may—unwittingly or deliberately—share personal information without realising that they could be subject to identity theft, or that they are leaving behind content which might not reflect well on them in the future. They might be exposed to content which is sexually explicit, violent, prohibited or even illegal. They might experience cyberbullying or be at risk from contact by strangers. Teenagers, in particular, might be caught out by the commercial side of the internet—through advertising, scams or through sharing downloads of music or television programs. Parents can play a critical role in helping their children have safe and positive experiences online. You can do this by becoming aware of how children and young people use the internet, what they use it for, the risks in being online and some of the strategies to manage these risks. To find out more visit the newly released Australian Communications and Media site called Cybersmart at http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/. |

We are thrilled to recieve news of Dayle Manley's appointment to our region as a Literacy Coach in schools. Thrilled not only for her but because she will now spend two days each week, until the end of the year, working with teachers from Years 3-6 as they explore a range of teaching strategies and models to respond to the needs of our students. Although we will be sad to loose Dayle as a classroom teacher we are excited to have Anne Delaney, who has been teaching in P/1D for several days a week this year, accept a part time teaching position on the class. Gabrielle Panuzzo, who has worked throughout the school as a casual teacher, will fulfil the other part time position on P/1D. The experience of both these teachers will provide a smooth transition and learning continuity for all students into the second half of the year. |
